Watch Making a Murderer

The 10-part Netflix series "Making a Murderer" is a real-life documentary that explores the struggles of a man facing a bizarre and horrific accusation of murder. Steven Avery was released from prison in 2003, after serving eighteen years for a rape that he didn't commit; DNA evidence exonerated him. In 2004 Avery filed a civil lawsuit, seeking thirty-six million dollars in reparation for his wrongful conviction, But, a year later, Avery was again charged with murder. He was convicted in 2007 and given a life sentence. Filmed over a ten-year period, "Making a Murderer" documents the course of Avery's case and raises disturbing issues about the criminal justice system in the state of Wisconsin.

As Avery's trial proceeds in the Netflix series, serious questions are raised about unethical behavior on the part of police and prosecutors. Charged along with Avery was his nephew, who confessed that he and Avery were guilty of the crime. But the boy suffers from a learning disability; evidence suggests that he was tricked or confused into confessing something neither had committed. Furthermore, police investigators had ample opportunities to plant evidence against Avery; two of the officers had been involved in Avery's 1985 conviction and may have had an animus against him.
